SPECIAL
INTEREST GROUP SESSIONS
(SIGs) Tuesday 26th June, 9am – 12 noon,
Bruce Mason Centre
These informal
sessions provide the opportunity for individuals to come together as a group to
discuss a common topic or issue of interest. The various topics to be discussed
are: Edge City Networks; Business Improvement Districts (BIDs); Managing Retail
Sprawl; Transit Oriented Design (TOD); and Place Making. Please nominate on your
registration form which SIG session you would like to take part in. Please email
renee@ictcsociety.org
should you wish to suggest an additional SIG topic to be included in the program
or nominate to lead any one of the above SIG topics. Selection of topics will be
at the discretion of the organising committee. These sessions are inclusive for
fully registered and Tuesday delegates. Coach transfers will be provided prior
to sessions for those delegates who are staying at any of the three
conference Hotels in Auckland CBD.
KEYNOTE
SPEAKERS
David Feehan, President,
International Downtown Association (IDA), New York, USA
Dave Feehan has
devoted a 35-year career to rebuilding and revitalizing cities. He has directed
downtown programs in Des Moines, Detroit, and Kalamazoo, and neighborhood
development programs in Pittsburgh and Minneapolis. He helped found and served
as the first director of the Citizens League of Southwestern Pennsylvania, a
Pittsburgh-based regional public policy organization. He has been active in IDA
for 15 years, and the programs he has directed have won several awards, from
IDA, the International Parking Institute, and the US Department of Housing and
Urban Development. He has served IDA as a board member and officer, most
recently as chairman. He was appointed by the board to serve as president and
chief executive officer in April, 2001.
Under Dave’s leadership, IDA has
set records for attendance at conferences, and has seen steady growth in other
areas.Dave maintained an active consulting practice before
coming to IDA, assisting a number of cities, including New York, Chicago, Las
Vegas, and Miami Beach.
Dave holds a Masters Degree in Social Work Planning and Administration from the
University of Pittsburgh. He has served as an adjunct professor at the
University of Iowa and Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, MN.
Ethan Kent, Vice
President, Project for Public Spaces, New York, USA
Ethan Kent is a knowledgeable and articulate expert in the practice of
Placemaking, with experience on over 150 PPS projects. He is driven by the
potential of places to be catalysts for healthy communities and local economies,
and his work at PPS is fueled by his experiences evaluating and photographing
public spaces in hundreds of cities around the world.
During his time at PPS, Ethan has been
deeply involved in many technical assistance projects including large-scale and
complex transportation projects, streetscape improvements and transit facilities
and many parks, plazas and civic squares. In conjunction with these projects,
Ethan regularly develops and conducts workshops and training sessions in
addition to practicing comprehensive public space analysis, planning and
visioning.
Instrumental in the refinement of PPS'
community participation tools and techniques, Ethan has contributed a
significant portion of the content that appears in PPS presentations. He has
also guided content development and management for the PPS website and for PPS'
collection of over half a million images. His articles, quotes and images have
appeared in numerous publications including Landscape Architecture
Magazine, Utne Reader, Urban Land and Governing
Magazine.
An inspiring and persuasive speaker,
Ethan has brought PPS' Placemaking message, experience and resources to many
groups around the world. In addition to being hosted by many communities, he has
recently presented to graduate planning and design audiences at Yale, Columbia,
University of Washington and Harvard, and conferences of ULI, LISC, Planners
Network, and the World Social Forum.
Education: Ethan studied sociology,
environmental studies and economics at Bowdoin College in Maine. He explored
local development issues in the context of globalization during a year spent
traveling around the world as a participant in the International Honors Program.
Ethan completed all course work for a Masters Degree in Environment and
Community through Antioch University Seattle.
